1Guide best wines of France 2016
Martin Schaetzel **

The wines: Effusive and with a juicy look, Rieslings make a nice start. The 2012 vintage has resulted in terroir-driven and understated wines with lovely ripe fruit and a hint of acidity. Kaefferkopf exhibits flavors of herbal tea and mint on the nose, with elegant mouthfeel and a lively finish. Pfersigberg is expressive with flattering nose of pastry and exotic fruit, and round on the palate. Eichberg is richer but still closed-in. It will need 10 years of cellaring to mature. Finally, Rangen stands out for its structure and saline mouthfeel. Pinots Gris Grands Crus are fat yet not heavy and make beautiful table wines. Gewurztraminers are appealing, with the redeeming freshness of the Kaefferkopf.

Eguisheim’s Eichberg is one of the four Grands Crus available from us. The yellow-gold hue heralds a deep nose of white flowers and very ripe citrus, with a hint of honey. On the palate, the wine is powerful, full and round, and well-balanced by an appropriate acidity. These are as many features making this wine a perfect match for dishes in (cream) sauce.

Martin Schaetzel **

Jean Schaetzel took over this Ammerschwihr estate back in 1979; by the way, he largely helped Kaefferkopf vineyards to become Alsace’s 51st Grand Cru area. We would like to highlight the consistency of this estate’s wines, especially when it comes to Grands Crus.
